How long have you been coming to Lift?

I first came 12 years ago when it was still called White Lion Street and I was a little kid. I used to come here to get soup and play computer games with my Uncle. So when it became Lift I came back about five years ago.

What do you do?

Archery, the gym, boxing, cooking, youth sessions and now I also work as a recreation assistant here helping with set-ups for commercial bookings.

How has Lift helped you?

Whatever background you come from, whatever country you come from this is your second home. Everyone treats you like family.

What is the most important thing you have learnt?

Being here has improved my confidence and social skills as I would talk to the youth workers and staff about my problems or issues.

What is the most fun you have ever had?

Cooking. Every week there is something new to cook and you taste food from different cultures. Also the gym. I remember every week we got given a deck of cards and every card revealed we had to do a type of exercise until 52 completed.

What would you say to a young person that has never been here before?

Come here for the vibe. It is welcoming and the facility is here for you. There is a variety of things to do so you will never get bored. It is very safe here. Your parents will know you are somewhere safe.

What do you hope to be doing in three years’ time?

As I have been working here and see how the system runs I would like to run my own business. I am a sports person so either a gym for PTs or coaching for a football team.

How is Lift helping you to reach your goals?

Lift has built my confidence and I can now I feel more comfortable communicating with people I don’t know. As I have been working here talking to business customers has helped me understand different people. I have seen so many businesses and seen how they operate and it given me ideas of career options.
